Der Rosenkavalier is a waltz opera!
It doesn't matter that the Viennese danced minuets in the Rococo period. After all, the Viennese dialect in Der Rosenkavalier is an artificial language invented by Hugo von Hofmannsthal – the poet's opera libretto is a work of art in itself. And then there's the music! Special trains were laid on for the first performances, such was the enthusiasm of the audience. The opera opens the Whitsun Festival, sung by dream voices down to the smallest part. In the concert performance, the SWR Symphony Orchestra plays under its principal conductor François-Xavier Roth. And after Der Rosenkavalier? Music from the fin de siècle and the Rococo period. Plus, between minuets and waltzes, swinging jazz arrangements. We are sure that Strauss would have enjoyed this bouquet of roses.
