The medieval "hortus botanicus" herb garden of the monasteries was the forerunner of the botanical gardens established as early as the 16th century.
Thanks to the initiative of the Black Forest Association and in co-operation with the pharmacist Friedrich Böckle, the Apothecary Garden was created in July 2000 as a kind of "open-air library" of herbal medicine in the Bad Liebenzell spa gardens.
From A for adonis to Z for fenugreek, the 160 plant species in the pharmacist's garden in the Bad Liebenzell spa gardens are organised according to their different areas of application, such as heart/circulation or cough/bronchitis.
In addition to these "indication beds", other beds are dedicated exclusively to aromatic herbs and plants that are used in homeopathy, for example.
For blind and visually impaired visitors, a scent and touch garden was added to the grounds in 2003. Here, the plants are arranged at touch and feel height and information is provided in Braille on small signs.
From May to September, pharmacist Friedrich Böckle offers guided tours through the special herb garden.
