The village of Binzen is located between the gentle Markgräfler hills to the west and east and the wide open landscape of the Rhine plain to the south, close to the city of Basel.
The town of 2,900 inhabitants is the seat of the Vorderes Kandertal administrative association, which was founded in 1971 and includes five other neighbouring municipalities. Binzen was first mentioned in a document from the monastery of St Denis near Paris in 767. Later, the village was mainly subject to taxes and duties to the Bishop of Basel - in 1769 it was assigned to the Margraviate of Baden. In the last 50 years, the municipality, which is located on the motorway and federal road 3 as well as close to the Rhine Valley railway line, has experienced prosperous economic development, which is visibly expressed in the generously laid out commercial areas at the Dreispitz transport hub. However, the village is still strongly characterised by agriculture. The main industry is viticulture, which is practised on around 60 hectares of vineyards. The main grape varieties cultivated are Chasselas and Pinot Noir, with Müller-Thurgau, Nobling and Chardonnay also grown to a lesser extent.
