We capercaillies have had better times in the Black Forest. Currently, there are only about 300 adult birds left in the northern Black Forest – an estimated 30 of them at Kaltenbronn. The forests have simply become a bit too dark for us over the last decades. Especially when the spruces grow too tall, the blueberries on the ground disappear and in summer we can't find anything decent to eat. Storms and targeted maintenance measures by foresters and conservationists help us by letting a bit more light onto the ground again.

Come to the Capercaillie Trail: here you can surely spot us, learn something about us, and afterward enter the great interactive exhibition at the Kaltenbronn Info Center for free!

There is a stamp station along the way. With the stamped flyer, you can enter the Kaltenbronn Info Center free of charge with the whole family.

Wegbeschreibung

From the Kaltenbronn Info Center, we follow the running capercaillie as a path symbol slightly uphill and after a few hundred meters the path turns into the forest and we change onto a narrow path right through the blueberries. We follow this before reaching a gravel road shortly before the ski slope. We walk on this above the ski slope until the path turns right back into the forest and leads us back to the starting point.

The circular route leads on narrow, rooty natural paths right through the bright forest.

Therefore, we recommend sturdy footwear, some fitness, and surefootedness
