Freudenstadt is the highest town in Württemberg. It lies at an altitude of 591 to 968 metres on a plateau on the eastern edge of the northern Black Forest.
Germany's oldest holiday road, the Schwarzwaldhochstraße, leads from the town of Baden-Baden to the market square as part of the B 500. With an area of 219 x 216 metres, the market square is the largest enclosed market square in Germany. The long-distance hiking trails Mittelweg and Ostweg of the Black Forest Association pass by here.
Mining in today's Christophstal district was mentioned in documents as early as 1267. To promote silver mining in Christophstal, Duke Friedrich I of Württemberg had his master builder Heinrich. Schickhardt to build a town in the Black Forest. A mint was also built here to process the silver mined, where the "Christophstaler" coins were minted.
In 1899, the citizens erected the Friedrichs Tower on the Kienberg in honour of the town's founder.
