History
The listed village inn "Zum Rößle" suffered the same fate as so many village inns: after a gradual decline, the building was initially intended to be sold in 2008. However, as no buyer could be found, an initiative was formed in the village with the aim of saving the listed single-roofed building and revitalising it as an inn for the village.
Design and concept idea
The initiative succeeded in forming a committed co-operative made up of local residents and tradespeople. Both the planning concept and parts of the realisation could be carried out by the cooperative itself. The initial approach was to "dust off" the parlour and put it back into operation. This room, with its very simple historical furnishings, is characterised by its atmosphere. The kitchen and toilets were remodelled according to modern and contemporary guidelines, and there is even a barrier-free toilet.
Once this first step had been completed and a financial basis for further investments had been created, the inn was gradually renovated with the help of further co-operative shares. Guests now have 7 double rooms, a small flat and a spacious, cosy and quiet garden restaurant at their disposal. The south façade, the badly damaged hip and the shingle cladding on the east side have also been renovated. The inn has enjoyed great popularity since the day it reopened and has not only become the centre of the village, but also a point of attraction for the whole region and far beyond. The co-operative now has 223 members from Germany and abroad who have purchased 462 shares of 1,000 euros each and invested in the building. Added to this are countless hours of voluntary work to maintain the building and run the co-operative.
Thebottom line
The rescue of the village inn through civic engagement is exemplary. The historic building, which characterises the village, was made usable again and further developed. The village inn and its co-operative are now regarded by the Baden-Württemberg Association of Co-operatives as a flagship project, setting an example for many other initiatives.
