Volcanoes and vineyards... accompany the cycle path to Tengen. The Hohentwiel ruins are enthroned high above the town of Singen at 688 metres. Covering an area of 9 hectares, it is one of the largest fortress ruins in Germany and offers an impressive view: From the historic fortifications, the view sweeps from Lake Constance over the rolling hills of Thurgau to the peaks of the Swiss Alps. The fortress, which was first mentioned in 915, experienced both peaceful and stormy times until it was blown up by French troops in 1800. Germany's highest vineyard lies halfway up the hill below the ruins of the fortress. The Elisabethenberg and the Olgaberg produce excellent wines every year thanks to volcanic weathered soils.
"Engen, Tengen, Blumenfeld are the most beautiful towns in the world". You will soon realise that this is not just a rhyme. The landscape characterised by small hills, also known as "little Tuscany", is captivating due to its scenic beauty and cultural richness.
In Blumberg-Zollhaus, the starting station of the "Sauschwänzle-bahn" railway and the associated railway museum with signal box is another highlight of the stage.
The Fürstenberg was once the ancestral seat of the Princes of Fürstenberg. Today, the Cardinal Bea Chapel stands on the summit, which also serves as a starting point for many hang-gliders. The town of Hüfingen, with its historic, listed old town and Roman bath ruins, is a real gem and is known far beyond its borders. The family leisure pool "aquari" with its sauna area is the perfect place to relax.
