The wrought-iron bridge built by the Benckiser ironworks in 1863 was still called the Turnsteg (gymnastics bridge) at the time, as it led to the gymnastics ground, which was still a little further downstream. It was moved to its present location in 1904 and destroyed in an air raid on 23 February 1945. In 1946, the footbridge was rebuilt for 30,000 Reichsmark. The new centre section was made from iron girders taken from ruined houses. It was renovated in 1997 and the footbridge was placed under a preservation order.
The footbridge is named after Emilie Benckiser (1839-1917). She was the wife of August Benckiser, a mechanical engineer and entrepreneur from Pforzheim.
