The 31 metre-high Eugen Keidel Tower is often referred to as the Schauinsland Tower because of Freiburg's local mountain. The tower was built in 1981 and named after Eugen Keidel, who was Lord Mayor of Freiburg from 1962 to 1982.
The tower has a very special design. The platform stands on four Douglas fir trees felled in Freiburg's city forest. In the centre, an open staircase with 85 steps leads to the covered platform.
The best way to reach the tower is to take the famous Schauinsland cable car. The cable car is Germany's longest circulating cable car. From the mountain station, it is only a few metres to the tower.
A visit to the Eugen Kandel Tower can be ideally combined with a hike on the Schauinsland with breathtaking views.
An insider tip: when it is cloudy and grey down in the valley, there is often an inversion weather situation - then it is sunny above the clouds on the Schauinsland and you can enjoy a particularly wide panoramic view!
