Lake Ferma is a quarry pond. Decades ago, an old arm of the Rhine was dredged to extract gravel and sand and Lake Ferma was created. To protect the lake, especially the bird life, boating and diving are not permitted. Swimming is permitted in the south-eastern area, where there is also a car park. The bathing season runs from 15 April to 15 October each year.
An information leaflet ("Naturschutzgebiet Altrhein Neuburgweier") available from the Rheinstetten town council provides information about the ecological features, explains the eventful history of the landscape, which has been repeatedly changed by the Rhine, and also provides information about what is permitted and what should be avoided in the protected area.
