Feel good on the Rhine
This is why the Rhine is so beautiful: Grenzach-Wyhlen is located in the centre of the border triangle on the sunny side of the Rhine with a view of Switzerland - could it be more beautiful? Lots of cosy hidden spots, original paths right by the water, some under shady trees, some on paved surfaces - here you can relax and enjoy nature. You can hike along the Rhine for more than six kilometres, the Hochrheinwanderweg trail leads past the Altrhein nature reserve and shortly afterwards reaches the southernmost point of Baden-Württemberg. A detour to the geological and biotope of the renaturalised gravel pit offers an insight into the history of the earth and a realm of rare vegetation. The Grenzach outdoor pool with its large sunbathing area and idyllic shady spots is located directly on the Rhine.
Wine in Grenzach-Wyhlen
Grenzach red wine is famous beyond the town's borders. Every year, the sun-kissed red wine "Grenzacher Hornfelsen" grows on the southernmost vineyard in Germany. The south-westerly location, the special soil and the breeze from the Burgundian Gate combined with the many hours of sunshine - all the best conditions for a very good red wine.
With the Hornfelsen vineyard and other private winegrowers, the Markgräfler tradition is being continued and Grenzach-Wyhlen is being cultivated as a wine village. Thanks to the initiative of the local history association, the historic trotte from 1742 in the Rosenpark in Grenzach has been given a protected roof and can be marvelled at by hikers.
The Markgräfler Wiiwegli connects Grenzach-Wyhlen and Weil am Rhein with Freiburg over 92 kilometres. During a hike through the vineyards and a good glass of wine at the winegrower's, you can enjoy fantastic views of the Black Forest, the Rhine Valley and across to Alsace with the Vosges mountains.
Romans and Roman traces
The Grenzach Roman villa is one of the most important Roman archaeological sites south of Freiburg. The original walls, which are over two metres high, were built over with a shelter in 1986 and converted into a regional museum in 2011. It is the only museum in the district of Lörrach dedicated to the Romans and displays numerous finds from the region on the subject of "everyday culture". Visitors can explore the Roman world of the museum for themselves using informative display boards.
Metropolitan region within reach
If you want to get a taste of the big city during your stay in Grenzach-Wyhlen, you can reach the Swiss metropolis of Basel by bus every 15 minutes. Thanks to the attractive local transport services in the border region with frequent bus and train services, the municipality is an ideal starting point for activities in the border triangle of Germany, France and Switzerland.
