The mill, built in 1712 in the style of a heath house, stands as if on an island - surrounded by the Wild Gutach and the mill canal - around 20 minutes' walk from the centre of Simonswald.
The oil mill, trotte and grain mill represent a concentration of mill trades that are rarely found today. The special feature here is that all the furnishings have been restored to full working order.
The decay was halted by a private purchase in 1974 and the oil mill was restored and preserved. The municipality of Simonswald acquired the oil mill in 1999 and leased it to the Simonswäldertal Customs Association in 2000. After 42 years of standstill, walnut oil was produced again for the first time in 2002.
Take a guided tour and see for yourself how important such a mechanical facility was for the inhabitants of the valley back then.
Everything from kerneling the nuts to bottling and labelling the oil bottles is done by hand by volunteers. The top-class oil is in great demand and is available from the oil mill itself or from the ZweiTälerLand Tourismus online shop.
Every Thursday, bread is baked at the oil mill , alternating with Strieble or pizza.
On request, a farmer's snack with bacon and home-made sausage or coffee and cake is served. Advance booking required.
