In 2004, a large sculpture by the famous sculptor Peter Lenk was unveiled in Schopfheim. The artist thus winkingly recalls an episode of the Baden Revolution, which took place for one day in Schopfheim. Or rather - could have taken place. Because only two citizens and a dog responded to Friedrich Hecker's (1811-1881) fervent call at the time. Today, the 'unity and justice and freedom' he strived for has become a matter of course in our country. Or has it? Peter Lenk has designed his sculpture with subtlety. He ironically takes everything to extremes and scrutinises it. The message is clear: our democracy can only prove itself through lively discussion and controversy. That's why Schopfheim's landmark is in exactly the right place...
