Mythische Orte am Oberrhein - Breisach – Ettenheim

Explore an almost natural-looking Rhine floodplain and the extremely fertile cultural landscape of the Ortenau on this predominantly flat cycle tour. Start with us at Breisach market square and follow the Rhine cycle path towards Sasbach through a stretch of unspoilt floodplain landscape past the fishing town of Burkheim with its castle ruins, the hidden Sponeck Castle with the remains of a Roman fort to the Limberg, the northern outpost of the Kaiserstuhl volcanoes. Here you turn eastwards and cycle through the extensive orchards to the medieval town of Endingen. The edge of the Black Forest is now much closer, but the loess hills of the Ortenau are in front of it. We continue to explore it as far as Ettenheim and almost enter the Black Forest at Ettenheimmünster. However, we turn back towards the Rhine, leaving Europa-Park to the north and reaching the southern edge of the Taubergießen near Niederhausen. The Rhine Cycle Route first takes us through the old tobacco villages of Oberhausen and Weisweil before returning to the river itself. The towpath takes us past the former planned Wyhl nuclear power plant and back to the Limberg. From here you can either cycle along the Rhine embankment or through the floodplain forests back to the starting point in Breisach.
