Es stellt eine Art Gütesiegel/Qualitätsmarke dar und dient als Wettbewerbsvorteil bei der Vermarktung des touristischen Angebots von Wanderdestinationen. Die entsprechenden Wanderwege werden nach Kern- und Wahlkriterien analysiert. Die Bewertung der Kriterien basiert auf fünf verschiedenen Säulen. Diese sind Wegeformat, Wanderleitsystem, Natur/Landschaft, Kultur, Zivilisation. Zusätzlich wird zwischen Mehrtagestouren und kürzeren thematischen Tagestouren unterschieden.
