Offenburg - Salmen

Almost 200 years ago, the Salmen became famous far beyond the borders of Offenburg: on 12 September 1847, the "Determined Friends of the Constitution" proclaimed the "13 Demands of the People" in the Salmen Hall - the first catalogue of fundamental rights in the German language. The Jewish community later bought the building and used it as a synagogue until the local National Socialists vandalised and destroyed the prayer hall on 10 November 1938. The Salmen thus represents two completely opposing poles of recent German history: the dawn of democracy and freedom, but also the total destruction of the 20th century.
