The traditional wine-growing community with around 2,650 inhabitants presents itself as a place with a high quality of living and - despite numerous new buildings - a pretty, unmistakable townscape characterised by its history. Pfaffenweiler is located somewhat off the beaten track in a charming landscape with many opportunities for leisure activities.
On the Batzenberg and Oberdürrenberg, the fine varieties of Markgräfler wine thrive. The Hochfirst (500 m) with its varied mixed forest offers a peaceful and healthy recreational landscape with numerous hiking trails, an educational forest trail, the village nature trail and a fitness trail. Popular gems include the St. Servatius chapel with its forest rest area, the historic quarries, the rest area at the Dürrenberg monument with a magnificent view over Pfaffenweiler, the Rhine Valley with the Kaiserstuhl and Vosges mountains.
Interesting local history can be learnt on the well-signposted village nature trail and in the village museum. In addition to the two quarries with a smithy, the museum also includes the historic vineyard, a herb garden and the workshop of the last village shoemaker. Over 20 clubs enrich the cultural, musical and sporting life of the community, whose rich history with its village specialities has been compiled in an extensive village chronicle.
Following the completion of an extensive village development programme, Pfaffenweiler is now a historically aware and modern residential area with its own distinctive character. The existing infrastructure meets current requirements and is an expression of successful village development, which preserves its own way of life and offers prospects for the future. The local gastronomy offers a wide range of options for every palate, from Michelin-starred restaurants to ostrich taverns.
The people of Pfaffenweiler are known for their love of festivals. The highlight of the year is the annual, well-known "Schnecke-Fescht" on the first weekend in September.
