This is the ideal black forest: a dark, natural, but always ground-green forest with narrow paths, steep slopes, deep gorges and cascading streams, in between a clear, river in the valley, occasional look-outs and above the gorges green, swinging meadows with expansive views of distant forest mountains. All this has this way to offer, with a strong accent on a forest that seems to have grown for centuries as it wanted, with trees of all ages in dramatic poses. And as a heavyweight addition, a voluminous rocky backdrop of blocks and terraces, bizarre rock shapes of all sizes to even more dramatic walls and rocky seas - as from a Weber or Wagner opera. Anyone who has come to know the Black Forest so far only as a spruce forest, here gets an idea of what makes up its reputation.

With some luck you can see chamois in the early morning and late evening. Dawn and dusk are the best times to see the animals!
Directions
From the Herz-Jesu-Kapelle (Sacred Heart Chapel) in the centre of Staufen the tour initially proceeds across a meadow and along the edge of a forest until we come onto the trail up to Schwarza River Valley. After a few metres we bypass the Gießebuck area and cross the little connecting road that leads to the hydroelectric power station Wasserkraftwerk Schwarzabruck. The first steep scree fields appear at Kuchelfelsen, where the chamois settled here like to romp about. The rest area near Muckenloch is ideal for a snack break before we start the ascent (approx. 50 metres away there is a little mountain hut). The trail known as “Muckenlochpfad” in the protective forest area is a small, natural beaten path and leads up uphill. Shortly before the Rappenfelsen, the trail gets increasingly narrower and leads to steep slopes beneath rock faces. We follow the adventurous trail, leave the protective forest area, come to a site with wood shavings and reach our highest point, the Wartbuck. We hike across the upper Wartweg trail to the parking area for hiking (with a barbecue site), and there we cross the road between Brenden and Staufen. We follow the trail through a small grove on the trail known as “Bulgenbacher Weg”, pass the “Bündt” fallow deer enclosure and hike over the Bündtweg trail back to the starting point.
Surefootedness and a head for heights are required! For reasons of species protection we ask you to stay on the trail.
