Welcome to Schönau in the Black Forest
The state-recognised climatic health resort at the foot of the Belchen is the largest of the nine municipalities in the Black Forest region of Belchen. The town is famous as the home town and birthplace of Joachim Löw, the world champion coach of the German national football team, and as the headquarters of the Schönau electricity works ( EWS ), which became known throughout Germany as the "electricity rebels" and emerged from a citizens' initiative. Schönau in the Black Forest is also home to the office of the Black Forest Biosphere Reserve, which was founded in 2016 and recognised by UNESCO in 2017.
With its cosy town centre and the "Münster des Wiesentals", the largest church in the district of Lörrach, the small Black Forest town offers accommodation of various kinds. In addition to hotels, inns, guesthouses, private rooms and holiday flats, there is also a camping site and a separate caravan site where you can spend the best days of the year in Schönau.
On hot days, the Kneipp facilities and the outdoor pool, not far from the town centre, offer a welcome way to cool off. The heated outdoor pool has a beach volleyball court and a mini golf course, which can also be played by those who are not bathers. In addition, a boules court, various children's playgrounds, a football pitch, the energy adventure trail in the Buchenbrand and a table tennis table offer plenty of other leisure activities for families.
If you want to spend an active holiday, Schönau is the ideal starting point for all leisure activities. Hiking, mountain biking, cycling, golfing, tennis, fly fishing, paragliding - all of these are possible here, and the Wiesental cycle path from Todtnau to Basel is particularly popular with cyclists, as it leads past Schönau and is therefore ideally connected to the cycle path network. Wide forest paths and narrow trails along numerous mountain bike routes provide the right mix of enjoyable cycling and sporting challenge.
In addition to the numerous hiking trails, the "Rund um Schönau" circular adventure trail, the Philosophers' Trail, the themed trails "Urwaldpfad", "Wiedener Kirchweg", "Wandel eines kleinen Landstädtchens" and "Gletscherpfad" are ideal for walking and hiking. We also recommend a tour of the town's historical buildings and squares. Historical knowledge can also be acquired in the Klösterle local history museum, which is open every Thursday afternoon in the summer months. If you want to get to know the town from above, you can climb the church tower with the former head of the town hall.
A varied programme of events with various spa concerts, festivals, excursions, guided walks, children's events and much more ensures that young and old alike will never be bored.
In winter, holidaymakers can enjoy cleared winter hiking trails. Even a cross-country ski trail is groomed as far as the valley meadows on the Mühlmatt when there is snow. The Hohtann cross-country skiing centre is approx. 15 minutes away by car. The surrounding ski lifts in the Münstertal-Wieden ski centre, on the Belchen and in Fröhnd can also be reached in 10 - 15 minutes.
