- Truncated Pyramid Room | Bruce Nauman | Herrenstr. 3
The Truncated Pyramid Room at the Burghof is the work of American artist Bruce Nauman and his first work to be exhibited in Europe. At a height of 7.50 metres, the pyramid with its three wide, rectangular openings rises up as a walk-in room. Nauman's model seems ambivalent. Its form and accessibility are reminiscent of an Egyptian funerary pyramid, but he turns away from it again by cutting and opening the top.
2. sun faces | Rudolf Scheurer | Basler Str. 143
The "Sun Faces" by Lörrach sculptor Rudolf Scheurer greet visitors to the Dreiländermuseum. The artist consciously refers to the relationship to the sun as a life and joy-giving element rooted in our space. Cast in special aluminium, the three faces have a positive aura. Another Scheurer sculpture from 1967 can also be found in the inner courtyard of the Dreiländermuseum. The figuration, carved in Jura marble, was inspired by the saris of Indian women and represents the idea of evolution.
3. light in my head - my dark sister | Beatrix Sassen | Meeraner Platz, Weinbrennerstraße 12
Beatrix Sassen calls her work for Meeraner Platz "Light in my head - my dark sister". The 3.20 metre high sculpture, cast from aluminium, shows the soft profile of a face, whose expression becomes particularly apparent and glows in the striking light. Through the changing light conditions, Beatrix Sassen's work seduces the imagination and at the same time appeals to personal memories, making art in public space an emotional experience.
4. search for the city's best | Ralf Johannes Kratz | Adlergäßchen 10
The colourful sculpture "Suche der Stadt Bestes" by Ralf Johannes Kratz is located in Adlergäßchen. It was presented to the public in May 2002 as part of the celebrations for the town anniversary "900 years of Lörrach". The theme of the sculpture is taken from the book of the prophet Jeremiah and represents a call to take notice of the people in the town and to work for their welfare.
5th Existential Need | Konrad Winzer | Basler Straße 147-149
The sculpture "Existenzielle Not" by Lörrach artist Konrad Winzer is located between the vicarage and the town church. In his work, Winzer interprets the suffering and desperate human being. This location was chosen deliberately, as the sculpture stands opposite the former department stores' of the Jewish Knopf family, which now houses the town library. Like the many Jews of this city, the Knopf family experienced the horrors of National Socialism, suffering, despair and extermination.
6. crown fountain | Urs Bargetzi | Basler Straße 155
The Kronenbrunnen fountain on the corner of Herrenstrasse and Basler Strasse was designed by Swiss architect Melchior Berri and realised by Swiss artist Urs Bargetzi in 1827. The name of the fountain goes back to its location - in front of the former Gasthaus zur Krone.
7th Tendency rising | Lasse Brander | Am Alten Markt 1
The sculpture "Tendenz steigend" in front of the Sparkasse Am Alten Markt was created by the Swede Lasse Brander. Colourless, transparent glass, cut into rectangles and layered, winds gracefully upwards on a granite plinth. The light hitting the edge of the glass creates a play of colour and light.
8. fountain Am Alten Markt | Franz Häring | Am Alten Markt 1-2
The Am Alten Markt fountain by Franz Häring with its circular spring basin marks the central crossroads of the street, which was redesigned in 1995. The end point of the Alter Markt is formed by a disc clad in green serpentine. The connection between the two works is formed by a guiding line made of natural stone.
9th Market Fountain | Urs Bargetzi | Marktplatz 5
The fountain, made of Jura limestone and dating from 1838, is another work by Swiss artist Urs Bargetzi and a replica of the fountain on the Münsterberg in Basel.
10. granite Rosa Porriño | Ulrich Rückriem | Basler Straße 172
The cubic sculpture "Granit Rosa Porriño" on the old market square was created by Ulrich Rückriem. A mighty granite cube sits enthroned in the centre of an intersection.
11th Hirschenbrunnen | Urs Bargetzi | Turmstrasse 2
Urs Bargetzi designed the Hirschenbrunnen fountain at the junction of Turmstrasse and Tumringer Strasse with its classical column and town coat of arms in the trough in 1827. The Hirschen inn originally stood here.
12th Lever Monument | Wilhelm Gerstel | Hebelpark, Turmstrasse 22
The Hebel monument in Hebelpark was created in 1910 by Wilhelm Gerstel as a naturalistic, larger-than-life statue of the Alemannic local poet Johann Peter Hebel.
13 The Heiner and the Brassenheimer Müller | Karl-Henning Seemann | Bahnhofsplatz 7
The fountain figures "Der Heiner und der Brassenheimer Müller" by Karl-Henning Seemann can be found on Bahnhofsplatz. The depiction of the chubby miller, who looks perplexedly after Heiner as he rushes off on his horse, is based on a calendar story by Johann Peter Hebel.
14th Triad | Giancarlo Sangregorio | Egon-Hugenschmidt-Platz, Luisenstraße 16
The sculpture "Triade" by Giancarlo Sangregorio stands on Egon-Hugenschmidt-Platz in front of the town hall. It is an abstract stone sculpture made of black-green serpentine and red Swedish granite.
15th Lörrach Sitter | Franz Bernhard | Schwarzwaldstraße 19b
The large sculpture "Lörracher Sitzende" by Franz Bernhard has stood at the entrance to the town at the Schwarzwaldstraße/Gretherstraße junction since 1992. The artist starts from an essential representation in order to transform it artistically into this steel sculpture. The tool marks are deliberately left visible, the weld seams uncoated and the metal surfaces unsealed.
16th Ceramic Relief | Max Laeuger | Tumringer Straße 218
Max Laeuger's ceramic relief on St Boniface's Church shows the crucified Jesus with Mary and John as well as elements from the biblical parables. Max Laeuger created this work in the spirit of Art Nouveau in 1902 and the tile paintings are an important part of his oeuvre.
17th Cloud Scales | Franz Häring | Senigallia Platz, Tumringer Straße 204
The "Wolkenwaage" fountain sculpture on Senigallia Platz was created in 1997 by Franz Häring from three different materials - stone, steel and Plexiglas - and combined with the medium of water. Inspired by water, the artist sees the water basin as a ship into which he places eight fountains as sails. His installation is brought to life by a swinging water shovel that pours water into the basin twice a minute, symbolising the water cycle. A square, azure blue Plexiglas surface with the motif of a cloudy sky crowns the cloud scale and gives it its name.
18th Lörrach rising | Nigel Hall | Haagener Straße 6
The Corten steel sculpture by the English sculptor Nigel Hall stands in the passageway between the Sparkasse and the west side of the district administration office. Nigel Hall is a constructivist who develops non-objective spatial symbols, comparable to Eduardo Chillida or Norbert Krikke. Space and time are inseparable relationship factors in this free-standing sculpture. The sculptor gave his sculpture the name "Lörrach rising".
19. 9 November | Bernd Goering | Palmstraße 16
"9 November" is the name of the sculpture in front of the Lörrach District Office. Bernd Goering commemorates three dates: 9 November 1918, 1938 and 1989, all of which are political events and turning points in German history. Two upright concrete pillars flank two diagonal and seemingly intersecting concrete columns. Together they form a Roman IX and XI that can be read from both sides. The concrete material is intended as a reminder of the most recent event, the fall of the Berlin Wall. Cast-in letters refer to the events associated with the dates and also explain them.
20th Large Column Figure | Stephan Balkenhol | Senser Platz 7
The artist Stephan Balkenhol sees the bourgeois contemporary in his figure "Große Säulenfigur" and interprets him as an everyday and inconspicuous person. The original sculpture, made of Douglas fir wood, suffered from the weather and had to be restored. It has been on display in the Burghof culture and event centre since 2016. There is a metal replica made by Balkenhol on Senser Platz.
21st Interrupted cycle of nature | Bernd Goering | Tumringer Straße 187
"Interrupted cycle of nature" is the name of the fountain by artist Bernd Goering in Tumringer Straße south of Senser Platz. The imperfect circular shape symbolises man's disruptive intervention in nature.
22nd memorial plaque with seven-armed candlestick | Marktplatz 10-12
The memorial plaque with the menorah, a seven-branched candelabra, in Synagogengasse between Teichstraße and Neuer Marktplatz is a reminder of the former synagogue. Each arm of the menorah stands for a day on which God created the world. This Jewish site was severely damaged during the Reich Pogrom Night of 1938 and finally demolished in 1939.
23rd Lörrach Living Room | Wolfgang Krell | Market Square
"Living Room Lörrach" is the title of artist Wolfgang Krell's façade work on the "Läuger Wand" in the centre of the Neuer Marktplatz. The wallpaper-like background is based on a historical fabric pattern from the former fabric printing company KBC. The picture frames in the foreground are exemplary of the town's history and represent influential Lörrach personalities and historical places. In the centre of the ensemble, framed in gold, is the original piece of the wall: the Pfaff machine, which refers to today's Läuger sewing centre in Spitalstraße.
24th Tree of Life | Michael Fischer | Market Square
The fountain sculpture "Tree of Life" on the New Market Square was planned and realised by Michael Fischer. Above the elongated fountain trough rises the tree of life with a pair of lovers in the treetop as a symbol of all living things. It is not without reason that the artist chose lively moments, as a colourful farmers' market takes place on this market square on several days of the week.
