Directions
From the Teuchelwald Car Park follow the “Tannenriesen” signs along the Teuchelweg into the forest, past the rustic Waldcafé to the Agnesruhe shelter. There turn left uphill, cross the road and continue to the Schömberger Strasse Car Park (2nd starting point). Walk uphill past the information panel. At the 1st intersection (signpost Wölperweg), turn left and immediately right into a narrow footpath that leads to the idyllic forest meadow Waldliegewiese (Goldene-Kugel-Hütte). Go back on the same path to Wölperweg, then left and left again to Äußere Riviera and right on the “Ostweg” trail to signpost and shelter Sauteichhütte. There the trail turns left into the so-called “Baldenhofer Graben”.
Before taking this footpath, you can make a quick detour to see the grandfather fir (Großvatertanne), the largest fir in the Black Forest. Follow the Ostweg trail straight uphill to the next intersection (signpost Masselkopf), turn right and you will find the fir after 300 m at the end of a narrow footpath. Next to it, on the main trail, there are two more giant firs.
Back at the signpost Sauteichhütte, the Baldenhofer Graben branches off to the right. This natural footpath continues for about 3 km through the idyllic forest. The next highlight of the tour is the Berghütte Lauterbad chalet, a cabin restaurant with a stunning view over the hilly countryside and the Swabian Mountains. Continue on the trail “Oberer Palmenwaldweg” to the Kienberg (signpost Friedrichshöhe). Climbing the “Friedrichsturm” tower is definitely worthwhile for the wonderful panoramic view over the Black Forest and Freudenstadt with its special Nine Men’s Morris layout. With its sculptures, roses, lawn with Kneipp basin, café and mini-golf park, the Kienberg hill is a popular recreational area. Accompanied by the fragrance of numerous roses and with a scenic view over Freudenstadt, you follow the serpentine ‘Rose trail’ (Rosenweg) down to the Teuchelwald Car Park (Bässler Brücke).
