Away from the tourist hustle and bustle, Vöhrenbach is nestled in gentle mountain slopes in the Upper Breg Valley (altitude 800-1000 metres), the valley where the Breg, one of the two main source rivers of the Danube, originates.
The recognised health resort with its idyllic districts boasts a wonderful Black Forest landscape with unspoilt nature, cosy rural restaurants, lovingly furnished holiday flats on farms, hiking and cycling trails (Schwarzwald-Baar cycling paradise), heated outdoor pool, caravan site, bee nature trail, barbecue areas, cross-country ski trails and three ski lifts.
A special excursion destination in the Vöhrenbach district is the Linachtalsperre dam. The dam wall in the neighbouring Linachtal valley is the first and only vaulted dam wall in Germany to be built in an open structure and is therefore a recognised architectural monument of national and special importance. The Linachtal dam was built between 1921 and 1925 and, after a "deep sleep" (first energy transition to nuclear power), was renovated and reactivated by the town of Vöhrebach between 2005 and 2007 so that renewable energy can now be generated again using hydropower. In addition to the revitalised power generation, the imposing structure on the dammed lake has once again become an architectural and tourist attraction. Between the power station building and the dam wall, a circular hydroelectric educational trail leads over the dam. Information boards explain interesting facts about the history and technology of this unique hydropower plant. A circular path around the lake completes the trail.
Guided tours of the dam and the power station building are organised by the Vöhrenach tourist information office, where fishing permits are also available. Other highlights in Vöhrenbach include the Bakockkirche church in the district of Urach with its painted fir wood vaulted ceiling from the 14th century and impressive onion dome, the legendary "Bruderkirchle" (St Michael's Chapel, first mentioned in a document around 1580) and the Urhmacherhäusle, built in 1725.
This historic Black Forest house with its permanent exhibition "A cross-section of the clockmaking trade" has been owned by the Heimtagilde Frohsinn e.V., an association dedicated to preserving and maintaining local history and tradition, since 1984.
The exhibition is open to visitors on request. A permanent orchestrion exhibition can also be viewed on request in the "Haus der Heimatgilde", which documents the outstanding importance of Vöhrenbach's musical works.
Vöhrenbach is also the starting point for many interesting excursions (Black Forest, Freiburg, Switzerland, Alsace, Kaiserstuhl, Lake Constance). With the Konus guest card, you can enjoy free bus and regional train journeys throughout the surrounding area.
