The Wallberg is both a vantage point and a memorial.
The younger generation is hardly aware that the Wallberg in its current form was artificially created with rubble from the Second World War. Therefore, the mountain is also called Monte Scherbelino.
Its natural height was 378 meters and covers a municipal water reservoir. After the fill, the height is 417.5 meters.
In 1989 a memorial plaque was placed here and in 2005 and 2006 the Wallberg was turned into a memorial and since then has stelae on the platform visible from afar.
Memorial steles
The steles admonish peace and the rejection of war to achieve political goals. They also recall the reconstruction effort after the total destruction of the city as an example of overcoming the crisis of that time. The five stelae (8, 7, 6, 5 and 4 meters high) show on each of their sides the city before and after the destruction on February 23, 1945. The stelae are made of stainless steel, are illuminated at night and were financed exclusively privately.
