From the Kalten Herberge, the Westweg follows the eastern side of the B 500, initially above and later below the road. At Lachenhäusle, the view is lost in the deeply incised Simonswald valley. A few kilometres further on, the remains of a defence system at the Türkenlouis-Schanze on the Hohle Graben (1,045m) are clearly visible in the spruce forest.
The trail circles the Doldenbühl (1,098m) with a marvellous view to the south and now heads for the inconspicuous Weißtannenhöhe (1,190m) via the Fahrenhalde with its great views. Bernau lies below to the right, dominated by the Feldberg massif filling the horizon.
Via Fürsatzhöhe and the rustic Berghäusle hikers' home, the trail leads down to Oberaltenweg with its typical Black Forest farmhouses. With every step towards Titisee, the question of "how to continue" becomes more and more important for those who are still undecided.
This is because the western route splits into two variants at the Kurhaus in Titisee.
Eastern route: On the busy Seestraße, the eastern variant circles the lake on the southern shore. Behind the campsites at the mouth of the Seebach, the path climbs steadily below the railway line up to Feldberg-Bärental.
