Mountain from inside
This place and its location are closely linked. Instead of usual playground toys, you will find special equipment related to the stone theme to stimulate your senses. Further facilities on the topic of mining such as an accessible exploratory mineas well as large information boards about the history of the place and the former Black Forest mine complete the site.
A very rare species of lichens were discovered some years ago on the neighbouring spoil pile. This lichens are a typical sign for nickel-bearing rock. Habitats like this are almost unique in Europe and are found only in Scandinavian countries, if at all. Elaborate information boardsavailable here.
Additionally, you will also find Usnea, referred to commonly as Old Man’s Beard. Hanging from birch tree branches, they indicate an extremely clean air. This doesn’t come as a surprise, however, as there is hardly any traffic and no industry in the Dachsberg area.
Stone cutting
For school classes, children and teenager groups, you can book guided tours including stone cutting to follow at the Dachsberg Municipality (phone +49 (0)7672 / 9905-0) or with our certified “Nature Guide Upper Hotzenwald”, the graduated biologist Heinz-Michael Peter (~ EUR 4 per person). Of course, we also organize tours for adults which you can combine with the mining trail and the mineral museum.
You will find the place above the Klosterweiher, a small lake near Dachsberg-Wittenschwand. A car park is available at the lake between Horbach and Wittenschwand with a short uphill walk of about 300 m.
