History of the castle
Built in the 11th century, the castle was continuously expanded to become one of the most powerful fortresses in south-west Germany. It was damaged during the Thirty Years' War and almost completely destroyed during Louis XIV's Wars of Succession.
But even as a ruin, the partially renovated fortress still looks mighty and has become the landmark of the lower Wiesental. The two climbable towers offer a marvellous view over the Wiesental valley.
The museum in the Landschreiberei displays artefacts from the long history of the complex as well as models of the castle. Changing themed showcases provide an insight into medieval life.
Guided tours
In summer, you can get to know the castle on three public guided tours organised by the tourist information office. Group tours of the castle complex are possible all year round. Please contact: tourismus@loerrach.de or info@burgruine-roetteln.de.
Culture at the castle
During the castle festival, the castle becomes a stage. Enjoy classical theatre against a stylish backdrop on balmy summer nights. Another open-air highlight is the "Jazz auf der Burg" festival, which is supported by Jazz Club 56 Lörrach.
