3 facts about Feldberg
The subalpine island: Feldberg has been a designated nature reserve since 1937. The bare summit of the peak is due to the fact that 1,000 years ago, people began to clear the forests and use the meadows for grazing cattle. However, the consequences of the last ice age, such as moors and avalanche tracks, also prevented the Feldberg region from becoming densely vegetated and ensure a sub-alpine climate.
Home of skiing: The Black Forest and the Feldberg region in particular are regarded as the cradle of skiing in Central Europe. In 1891, Dr Pilet, a Frenchman, skied on the Feldberg for the first time. From then on, it wasn't long before the first ski clubs, ski factories, competitions and lifts made skiing a popular sport.
Black Forest gateau: It is the sweet temptation that no holidaymaker in the Black Forest can ignore: the Black Forest gateau! If you want to know how it is made, you can look over the shoulder of the "Gscheiten Beck" in Feldberg-Bärental and of course taste it afterwards.
Feldberg and its villages
Altglashütten: The name says it all: glassmakers once lived here! And there is still a glass artist based in Altglashütten today. Peter Eckhardt produces unique works of glass art, and watching is expressly permitted!
Bärental: The railway station in Bärental has a special feature: at 967 metres above sea level, it is the highest railway station in Germany. The Dreiseenbahn railway stops here every hour. The scenically unique route leads from Freiburg via Titisee to Bärental and on to Schluchsee.
Falkau: Families in particular feel at home in Falkau. Easy walking paths lead to the mini golf course with kiosk, right next to it is the adventure playground "Resis Abenteuerland" and in between you can cool off your sandy feet in the water treading area.
Neuglashütten: The Hirschbädermoor is located on a narrow saddle between the Menzenschwander Alb valley and the Neuglashütten valley basin. The extraordinary: At an altitude of 1290 metres above sea level, it is the highest raised bog in Baden-Württemberg.
