Nature lovers and history fans are going to enjoy their stay in Furtwangen. It offers a unique cultural landscape with many excursion destinations to discover, for example the Hexenlochmühle, which is the only mill in the Black Forest that is operated with two water wheels. Also pay a visit to the source of the Danube or hike on an impressive circular trail to the statue Balzer Herrgott, which is ingrown in a tree. Those with a thirst for knowledge can book a guided tour and delve even deeper into the history of clocks, from the Stone Age to the atomic age. Collectors and watch lovers should not miss the annual Antique Watch Exchange in August.
Visitors can also travel back in time in the Arche museum: Cellar, stable, guest room and guest parlor are furnished as they were 60 years ago and offer a glimpse of tourism in the early 20th century. On Sundays, the cozy guest room invites visitors to enjoy coffee, cake or a snack.
In Furtwangen, exciting history meets a picturesque Black Forest landscape. And there, between grazing cows and dense forests where the cuckoo is at home, the Danube has its origin. It is the bubbling waters of the Breg that join the Brigach in Donaueschingen and eventually grow into the great Danube River. 2,857 kilometers later, the Danube flows into the Black Sea. A bronze statue of Danuvius, the river god, watches over the source of the Danube, which is located below St. Martin's Chapel.
Where the water gurgles below, a fantastic distant view awaits above. On the Brendturm or the Stöcklewaldturm you not only overlook the surrounding slopes of the Black Forest, but in good weather you can also see the Feldberg, the Vosges and the Alps. Next to each of the towers is a restaurant that invites you to stop to eat afterwards.
Furtwangen also offers athletic challenges, for example at the Black Forest Bike Marathon, which takes place in September. Participants can choose a route depending on their training level and ambition: from 42 to 120 kilometers. After 800 to 3100 meters of altitude, participants reach their starting and finishing point Furtwangen again.
