Description
The Goldene Krone is a house with style and tradition. The inn was built in the middle of the 18th century (1757). Its first guests were pilgrims who had travelled to the monastery of St. Märgen in the Black Forest. Secular guests soon joined them; counts, barons and other aristocratic titles can be found in the guest lists. The success continued at the beginning of the 20th century, when the inn was significantly extended and transformed into a grand hotel. There was little sign of this splendour in the second half of the 20th century. The carefully refurbished interiors and the magnificent façade were in danger of falling into disrepair.
This gem was saved by eleven private individuals who came together in 2003 and founded the "Goldene Krone GbR".
The aim was to restore the monument as faithfully as possible to its original appearance from around 1900. The most obvious measure was the restoration of the elaborate decorative façade with its gables and bay windows and the reinstallation of the historic mullioned windows. At the same time, a glazed porch brings plenty of light into the building. The interior also wanted to revive the grandeur of bygone times and, in keeping with the Art Nouveau hall, the ceilings and walls were clad with stucco elements.
Today, the Goldene Krone also shines thanks to its excellent catering and cuisine, which is run by countrywomen.
A jewel of bygone times, the Art Nouveau hall has been renovated and is now once again available for festivities of all kinds. The Krone is not only a "place of pilgrimage" for travellers from afar, but also accommodates local residents in its flats, in keeping with the tradition of the house, which at the beginning of its illustrious career provided accommodation for the "Beständer", the members of the monastery.
Conclusion
Exemplary contemporary document for the beginning of tourism in the Black Forest. The building, which had been vacant for a long time, was saved from decay by civic commitment and its original use was revitalised
