Design
The focus of the design is based on the use of sustainable materials and the reference to the surroundings - the Black Forest Highlands. As the building is a purely functional structure and due to the waste heat from the technical systems, the building was designed without an energy standard and remains unheated.
Material / construction
The exterior wall construction consists of vertical, natural, debarked silver fir logs trimmed on three sides, which were joined together to form elements by grooving silver fir boards. The inside of the wall appears smooth and precise thanks to the planed surface, while the outside is rough and natural, creating a reference to the forest and location.
Sustainability / energy concept
The heating network (bioenergy village) in Schluchsee was realised in 2019/2020. Around 140 building owners, including the municipality and many large consumers, have opted to connect to the renewable heating network. There are also over 50 pre-installations. A solar thermal system with a collector area of around 3,000 m² supplies the entire village with heat in summer. Two wood chip boilers, which are fuelled with biomass from regional forests, provide the medium load in winter. There is also a peak load and emergency boiler based on oil, which supplies less than 2% of the annual heat requirement.
Bioenergy village Schluchsee compact:
- Operator: solarcomplex AG-
- Population: approx. 1,700
- Connections: approx. 148 buildings
- Solar thermal: 3,360 m²
- Wood boiler: 1 x 1,200 kW, 1 x 900 kW
- Buffer storage: 300,000 litres
- Heat sales: approx. 10 million kWh p.a. (approx. 1.4 million litres of heating oil replacement)
- CO2 savings: 4,500 tonnes/year
- Heating network: 11.2 km
- Investment: around € 11 million
Bottom line
The use of locally felled, rough, natural silver fir trunks creates a direct link to the forest and the location. The building blends harmoniously into the site. The positioning of the building and the location are well chosen. The choice of materials (combination of rough wood and steel tanks) is successful. The design and architectural language for a purely functional building is exemplary and convincing.
