The Kandel is the highest mountain in the central Black Forest, located between Waldkirch and St. Peter. Unique views of the Black Forest, the Vosges and the Alps, along with countless outdoor sport opportunities and welcoming gastronomies make this mountain massif one of the top destinations in the Black Forest.
The upper part of the Kandelfelsen (rock), the so-called Teufelskanzel (Devil's Pulpit), collapsed in 1981 on Walpurgis Night from 30 April to 1 May. About 2,000 cubic metres of rock came loose still lying below the Kandelfelsen.
This is a popular spot for climbers offering numerous routes of varying levels of difficulty.
There are also take-off sites for hang-gliders and paragliders on the Kandel with a landing site in the Waldkirch district of Heimeck. During the winter season ski lifts and a cross-country ski trail can be found.
Every year the Kandel mountain run takes place. It starts on the market square in the town of Waldkirch. From there runners need to overcome 980 meters of altitude along the country road up to the top of the pass.
