The writer Joseph Victor von Scheffel gave the mountain lake its name. The name "Schwarzsee", which had previously been used for the five hectares of dammed up water, was then abolished. In Scheffel's honour, a local rock formation was given the name Scheffelfelsen (Scheffel Rock) and you can feel it here: the wild and romantic atmosphere of this environment. Even today, you can still feel how the atmosphere of this spot set the mood for the writer's story centuries ago.
Today, the mountain lake is a popular local recreation area in the middle of the southern Black Forest, nestled in the beautiful Säckingen town forest. It combines the experience of nature with various leisure activities. The lake is approx. 30 minutes' walk north of the old town centre and is freely accessible all year round. It is not a bathing lake.
There is a small restaurant on site, pedal boat hire in the summer months and a high ropes course, as well as the popular game reserve nearby.
