The Merkur mountain delights with breathtaking views, a fascinating ascent as well as unique hiking and walking trails. The traditional Merkur funicular railroad, an attraction and a popular excursion destination in Baden-Baden, is the longest of it´s kind in Germany.
The „Merkur Bergbahn“ takes walkers, excursionists, hikers and nature lovers up to the 668-meter-high summit of the Merkur mountain in a compfortable, safe and eco-friendly way.
You also have the opportunity to reach the summit on foot on well-signposted and safe hiking trails. Once at the top, the free elevator in the Merkur tower takes you to the 23-metre-high viewing platform, so that a total height of about 700 metres is reached. There you can enjoy a fascinating panoramic view not only over the basin of Baden-Baden but also to the highest mountains of the Northern Black Forest, the „Murg“ valley, across the Upper Rhine plain, to the Vosges, Haardt and Odenwald You will get a perfect view of the mostly ruins of Hohenbaden Castle, the Battert rock, the Castle ruine of Alt-Eberstein, the Fremersberg with it´s dominant tower and the Yburg castle. The "Badener Höhe" and the "Hornisgrinde" as well as the major cities of Karlsruhe and Strasbourg can be seen in the distance in good weather conditions.
Furthermore, on the “Merkur” summit you find a barbecue area, a sunbathing area, as well as a children´s playground.
Another highlight on the Merkur mountain is the opportunity to enjoy Baden-Baden and it´s surroundings from a bird’s-eye view with a tandem flight in a paraglider.
