Imposing viaduct & waterfalls
The Black Forest Highlands heritage trail, which leads past many old sawmills, mills and a ropery, takes hikers through the Ravenna Gorge. You should wear sturdy shoes on a hike through the Ravenna Gorge. On hot summer days, the green fir trees provide shade. Take care when it rains, as the wooden walkways and steps can become slippery.
In the lower section, the gorge is crossed by the 37 metre high Ravenna bridge, the viaduct of the Höllental railway. It is also home to St Oswald's Chapel (built in 1148) and the Sternen estate, where Marie Antoinette stayed in 1770 and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1779.
Winter tip: Visit the magically illuminated The Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market.
Hikes in the Ravenna Gorge
The Höllental valley is a popular excursion destination, and the Ravenna Gorge, a side valley, is particularly suitable for walks and hikes. The Ravenna stream flows through the gorge and impresses with its waterfalls: the large Ravenna waterfall with 16 metres and the small one with 6 metres. There are several well-preserved mills along the stream.
Please note:
In winter, the paths in the Ravenna Gorge can become dangerously slippery due to ice and snow, and the steps are often very slippery. We therefore generally advise against hiking in the Ravenna Gorge during the cold season. Safety first!
