The Häusern Power Plant belongs to the “Werksgruppe Schluchsee” of the Schluchseewerk AG – the largest hydroelectric power plant complex in Germany. The water flows in a natural gradient across three electricity-producing barrages. First from Lake Schluchsee to the Häusern Power Plant by the Schwarzabecken, then on to the Witznau Power Plant by the Witznau Valley dam, and finally to the Waldshut Power Plant. The water flows into the Rhine River at Waldshut. The three plants are pumped-storage power plants which partially pump the water back up. There are also two additional upper basins, the Hornbergbecken and the Eggbergbecken, operating other pumped-storage power plants. They are also known as the Hotzenwald Group. The Albbecken is also part of the complex. Its water flows across the Schwarza Valley lock to the Witznau Power Plant and the Witznau Valley lock.
The guided tours provide more detailed information on the plant.
