St. Laurentius was one of the seven deacons of Rome. According to legend, he was responsible for social work and church finances. During the persecution of the Christians under Emperor Valerian, he was slowly martyred alive over a grate in Rome in 258. He had previously distributed goods belonging to the church amongst the poor, calling them “the true treasures of the church”. Due to the nature of his martyrdom, he is honoured as the patron saint of cooks.
The chapel was built on the initiative of the Baschnagel family as a sign of gratitude and was consecrated on 10 May 1983. The chapel is adorned with a wooden figure of St. Laurentius as well as a painting depicting him as a deacon. The saint is shown with a right-angled wooden grating, a cross, and the Gospel.
Worshippers tend to celebrate May devotions here. Many of the numerous visitors to the Tannenmühle Hotel visit the chapel for reflection and prayer.
The chapel’s feast day is on 10 August.
