Chic wave: It's hard to imagine the hairdressing business today without it: the perm. Its inventor once came from Todtnau. At the end of the 19th century, Karl Nessler first emigrated to London, where he developed his invention and later helped it achieve worldwide fame in the USA.
Brush Mecca: Todtnau is still known today for its traditional brush industry. A miller's son from Todtnau developed the first brush more than 250 years ago. This gave rise to a huge industry and prosperity for the population. Brushes are still made in Todtnau today and a museum is dedicated to its history.
Wild water: Baden-Württemberg's highest natural waterfall plunges into the depths near the suburb of Todtnauberg. The water of the Stübenbach stream, which has its source on the 1,386 metre-high Stübenwasen mountain, plunges 93 metres into the depths here. The natural spectacle can be marvelled at from above as you walk across the Blackforestline suspension bridge.
The Todtnau Mountain Region and its sub-villages
Aftersteg: This place name only exists once in Germany. In the 14th century, there was only one footbridge over the Stübenbach stream below the waterfall; the seven farms inhabited by the local miners formed the settlement "Nach dem Steg", or "After-Steg".
Brandenberg: The districts of Brandenberg and Fahl originate from a mining settlement in the 14th century. Fahl is known for its challenging World Cup downhill run. The ski lifts and pistes are part of The Feldberg Cable Car, the largest ski area in the Black Forest.
Geschwend: After the historic Gasthaus Rößle had been closed for many years and had already been left to decay, the village community decided to breathe new life into the listed building with a great deal of hard work and perseverance in order to create a social meeting place in the village once again. Since then, the Rößle has been a popular restaurant far beyond the village boundaries.
Herrenschwand: The nature on the high plateau of Herrenschwand is completely unspoilt, where Hinterwald cattle, the typical Black Forest breed, graze. An idyll that can be explored while hiking in summer or on snowshoes or skis in winter.
Muggenbrunn: Families feel particularly at home in Muggenbrunn. In winter, tobogganing and skiing on the lift of the same name, in summer on the "Mugg's Brunnen" adventure trail. The trail around the village is 8 kilometres long, you can listen to exciting stories at 11 stations using a QR code and relax your feet on the barefoot path with a fountain.
Präg: Six glaciers once converged at one point here, forming a uniquely beautiful glacial basin. Today, several scree slopes and large boulders at the glacial lakes bear witness to the former glaciers. The natural lakes, which can sometimes dry out during long periods of warm weather, provide a habitat for a variety of rare animals and plants.
Schlechtnau: To the south of Todtnau lies the suburb of Schlechtnau. Various tunnel entrances in the district, some of which still exist today, bear witness to Todtnau's mining history, where iron ore was mined for many centuries.
Todtnauberg: On a walk or hike around Todtnauberg, very special places to sit await you. Whether you want to rest or take a breather, every seat is an experience in itself. Take a break on one of the two four-metre-high high chairs, the springboard, the wooden arch or the bird house.
