How did it come about? In 1989, the Vitra company opened the Design Museum, planned by Frank O. Gehry, to house its extensive chair collection, which is now one of the largest and most important of its kind in the world. A few years ago, the idea was born to recreate designer chairs on a scale of 1.5:1 to 8:1 from this treasure trove of chairs in the Vitra Design Museum and set them up at various locations around the city. In 1998, with the support of various associations, institutions, trade and commerce, a new city marketing concept was adopted and launched: Take a seat in Weil am Rhein, the city of chairs.
