The origins of mining in the Upper Wiesental go back to the Middle Ages in the 13th century. The Finstergrund mine was used to search for the precious metals silver and lead. From 1920 to 1974, mining activities focussed on the extraction of fluorspar (calcium fluoride). Among other things, fluorspar is used in metal processing and in dental care products.
The 'Zügli' - the mine railway - takes you into the tunnel.
On a tour, along level and easily accessible corridors, you can see the various rock deposits, the mysterious passages and crevices created by mining.
Special guided tours available on request.
