The Moor
Expanding on 10.8 hectare, the highmoor (about 1,000 m. a.s.l.) was already declared a protected area in the year 1938. This measure aimed at preventing the peat exploitation as planned for the area which would have meant a dramatic interference into the landscape. On a length of about three kilometers around the moor, the trail represents a large diversity of plant species and landscapes of our region as well as breathtaking views.
The education trail
The trail was designed in the early 1970s. On about 40 information boards you can read about the flora and fauna of the Hotzenwald and the effects of the altitude. The moor is hidden behind a row of trees along the route K 6590 with the path generously stretching around the moor, hereby allowing hikers to explore the magic moor scenery with its low, shrubby pines. In autumn, you can enjoy the splendid colours of the broad-leaved trees at the forest edge and stunning views of the Alpine panorama, for example, from the ”Bühl” hill near Horbach.
Flyer
For a small charge of EUR 2.85, the flyer “Around the Horbach Moor” is available at the tourist information centre. Here, you find all 40 information boards on the trail listed and explained again in detail.
In June 2009, the new pull-out map ”The moor is alive” was published, with illustrations and text information on the moor. This complimentary flyer is also available at the Dachsberg tourist information centre (tel.: +49 (0)7672 / 99 05 11).
Car park for hikers
The nature education trail starts at the car park for hikers ”Horbach Moor shelter” on the route K 6590 near Horbach, above Wittenschwand, a district of Dachsberg. We recommend stable footwear; please understand that the trail is not suitable for people with reduced mobility and for buggies.
Depending on snow conditions, the trail may not be groomed in winter.
